Y-Angaza: Work Skills and Peer Mentorship for Youth
Preparing young people for work and enterprise
Y-Angaza helps young people aged 18–26 turn what they learn at school into skills that work in the real world. Whether they go on to a job, further study or their own business, our fellows leave knowing how to show up, communicate, build relationships and keep going. Graduates can train as peer mentors for the next cohort.

The results so far
In our last three cohorts, 80% of fellows found gainful employment or started their own businesses. Our fellows now sell clothing, manage social media for clients, and run ventures built on cooking, baking and writing skills. Others have become trainers and mentors themselves.
Who it’s for
Young people aged 18–26 who are preparing to move into tertiary education or the workplace and want practical skills to do it with confidence.
How the program works
- Small cohorts of 15, so every fellow gets individual attention.
- A 2–3 day in-person training to build the foundation and the group, hosted at Jasiri Mugumo School, Lavington.
- 12 weekly virtual sessions of 1.5 hours each, about 18 hours of guided learning.
- Learning by doing. Within the first month, every fellow volunteers or works in a real setting and practises what they’re learning.
- Supervision and mentorship throughout, so fellows are supported while they apply their skills.

Alongside these, fellows build the everyday habits employers and customers value: responsibility, grit, work ethic, communication and personal discipline.
For employees and entrepreneurs alike
Y-Angaza doesn’t push one path. It builds the skills that let a young person succeed whichever way they go: making sense of what they learned in school and applying it at work, or turning a skill they already have into a source of income.
Opening doors on your own
Fellows find their own volunteer and work opportunities in their neighbourhoods and networks. They learn that you don’t need special connections to begin: good communication and networking open doors, and your skills keep you in the room. It’s a lesson that stays useful long after the program ends.
Peer mentorship
Graduates can step up as peer mentors, building leadership skills while guiding younger participants. Through leadership training and practical mentoring experience, they grow in confidence and responsibility, and the next generation gains role models who have walked the same path.
Making it accessible
The full program costs KES 10,000, and Angaza sponsors young people who can’t pay in full. Our goal is to make Y-Angaza free for every participant, and with the right partners we can.
Partner with us
Delivering Y-Angaza properly costs about KES 36,800 per participant. Support from companies, foundations and individuals goes directly to paying trainers fairly, supervising fellows at their work-experience sites, and covering training materials. We welcome sponsors for a single place, a full cohort, or a year of programs.
